Task 10 - Analysis of song lyrics

[Before song - actor sleeping, wakes screaming - sound from his scream is drowned out as the song starts]

Over bridge of sighs

To rest my eyes in shades of green

Under dreaming spires

To Itchycoo Park, that's where I've been

(What did you do there?) I got high

(What did you feel there?) well, I cried

(But why the tears there?) tell you why

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind

Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun

They all come out to groove about

Be nice and have fun in the sun

I'll tell you what I'll do (what will you do?)

I'd like to go there now with you

You can miss out school (won't that be cool?)

Why go to learn the words of fools?

(What will we do there?) we'll get high

(What will we touch there?) we'll touch the sky

(But why the tears there?) I'll tell you why

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind

Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun

They all come out to groove about

Be nice and have fun in the sun

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

It's all too beautiful, hah

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

It's all too beautiful, it's all too beautiful

Performed as a long tracking shot into the bedroom, where the actor is sleeping. Camera enters room, goes around to the actor [sleeps on side] for a close up. Actor is having a nightmare. Cut to above the actor, looking down. Actor will turn onto back. He wakes up screaming, looks directly into the camera, but as he screams, the music starts and we don't hear him. Will fade/cross-cut into the actual music video. Will also act as a subversion to a common film trope where a character wakes up AFTER having a nightmare. Instead here, the character awakes from a nightmare and goes INTO a dream.

Need to find a bridge.

- Because of the lyrics, the majority of the video will be shot on location around Bristol (Ashton Park, the Bear Pit, St. Mary Redcliffe, etc.). Some of the close-up performance shots likely to be done inside.

This can be literal - i.e., actor filmed outside a church (St. Mary Redcliffe).

- Want to try to avoid literal shots as much as possible

Film in an actual park.

- Might be able to do this in Ashton Court/Blaise Castle.

- 'itchycoo' - brambles and stingers

Symbolises a journey - can work this into narrative

Refrains sung by backing singers.

- Backing singers can be dressed stark and differently from the main singer

Obvious drug/psychedelic connotations.

This line and 'well I cried' can be filmed as a close-up of the singer.

Idea: some of these lines can be the actor filmed walking around the Cathedral, looking up in wonder (as if he is still on a trip)

Psychedelic/drug connotations.

This can be literal.

Try and film on a sunny day (in winter).

Backing singers again.

Possibility to show love interest of protagonist.

Can be shots of the actor/love interest walking around - possibly Bristol (Bear Pit)?

Need to simulate a trip - bath bombs, liquid slides.

Close up of actor actually shouting this - may be able to work it into the actual song.

This last section can be like a culmination of lots of different shots all mixed together, cutting quickly, in a way that does not make sense - this will confuse the viewer and add to the psychedelic feel.

The overall feel of the video should be as if it is a dream, but keep it realistic.

Idea - audio mixing. In the final verse, after the 'hah' and subsequent drums, attempt to pan the audio around the stereo stage, left to right and back, until the end. 'It's all too beautiful' will be one complete pan, so six in total. Might scrap this idea all together if opting for the mono mix rather than stereo.
